Biography
Beverley released her first album, "The B-Funk" in 1995,
on the independent label "Dome Records". Although the
album was critically acclaimed, it failed to make a commercial success
and Beverley eventually decided to leave the record company in persuit
of a bigger record company that could promote her in the best way
possible. "The B- Funk" contained the classic soul of
Beverley's debut single - "Flavour of the Old School"
- which still a firm favourite, appearing on R&B compilation
albums to this day. The album also included the singles "Moving
On Up (on the right side)" and "Down For The One".
"Prodigal Sista" was released in 1998 by EMI Records.
More critical acclaim followed - including two MOBO awards for Best
Album and Best R&B Artist. The album included two top twenty
hits - "Made It Back" and "Greatest Day" plus
"Rewind (find a way)" and the song Beverley considers
to be her greatest lyrical achievement - the haunting ballad "Sista
Sista".
However, it wasn't until 2003 when Beverley gained wide commercial
success. Following the success of the single "Shoulda Woulda
Coulda", her third album "Who I Am" rocketed into
the top ten, becoming a platinum-seller and one of the years definitive
releases. The album spawned the hits "Get Up!", "Shoulda
Woulda Coulda", "Gold" and the remixed version of
"Shape Of You" - a collaboration with the Fugee's Wyclef
Jean and his protigee Hollywood.
Beverley returned to our TV screens in the Spring of 2004 with the
blockbusting video for the rock-inspired "Come As You Are",
the lead single from her forth album, "Affirmation" -
which cemented her status as one of the UK's brightest stars and
most innovative artists, and looks set to finally propel her star
into the stratosphere. "Come As You Are" was followed
up by the contemplative "Not Too Late For Love" and the
brand new dance-floor filling single "Keep This Fire Burning",
which features the talents of Estelle on the remix.
Aside from her solo work, Beverley has worked on tracks with Jamiroquai
("Main Vein" and "Love Foolosophy", from their
"Funk Oddysey" album), Roni Size (on his recent top 40
hit "No More"), jazz legend Courtney Pine ("Hard
Times", from "Back In The Day"), Jools Holland ("Change
Is Gonna Come", from his "Small World, Big Band 2"
album) and french artist Sinclair ("Maybe Love" and "First
Time For You", from the soundtrack album "Mon Idole").
Beverley
is a commited charity worker, and recorded the song "Salvador"
after being horrified by the AIDs epidemic in Africa during a trip
to the country with Christian Aid. She also recorded the song "Love's
In Need Of Love Today" for the Warchild album "Hope"
and laid down vocals on the recent release of "Do They Know
It's Christmas" by Band Aid".
